The National Banner Of Gibraltar   by Richard Bluewood

Southern Spain has always been one of my favorite holiday destinations. This part of Spain and Gibraltar, which located at the most southern end or tip of the territory, is stunning in terms of culture and scenery. Gibraltar was once considered and marked as one limit of the world, this according to Europeans that is. During our visits to Southern Spain, my family and I would travel down to the British colony a good number of times.

The civil ensign was adopted back in 1982, which means it is only some thirty years old, making this flag a relatively young state ensign. Considered a colony of Great Britain, this colony has enjoyed a good share of independence however, through self-government. The civil ensign is flown from respective flag poles throughout Gibraltar, at times along side the Union banner and the flag of Europe.

The Gibraltarians are proud of their flag as it represents their territory as well as their nationalism. Hoisted on Gibraltarian flag poles, and displayed from balconies and such, this ensign features a red colored castle with 3 towers, and a key. These elements are symbolic of the strategic location of the Gibraltarian territory. The motto “Montin Insignia Calpe” recalls that this colony was formerly known as Calpe.

Back in 1704, a so-called “Anglo-Dutch” force captured this area as part of the war of the Spanish Succession. A short time later, the British took over this territory, and became an important stronghold and base to the British Navy. The colony’s economy relies heavily on tourism and financial type business and services. Also, shipping has become an important aspect of business for Gibraltar.

The Kingdom of Morocco is located to the south of the British overseas territory, right across the straight of Gibraltar. Morocco became independent back in ’56, and the flag that was introduced some decades earlier, was officially adopted as the nation’s ensign. This red colored flag is flown proudly on Moroccan flag poles. Red flags with various emblems had been used for at least three centuries.

There really is no similarity between the national ensign of Spain and the one flown by the inhabitants of Gibraltar. Spain’s flag is colored red and yellow, and hoisted proudly on Spanish flag poles throughout their territory. This ensign is considered on of many historical flags, unlike the Gibraltarian banner. The colors, in fact, were chose during the late years of the 1700′s. The ensign itself was not adopted officially till the year 1981.
